Mayday

I'm hitting a major rut, a wall, whatever you want to call it. And this is a call for help. I've been having problems with my back mostly, but I think it's causing problems with my hips, shoulders, knees. I'm finding that I'm scared to do a lot of things because it causes pain in my back, and now I'm losing skill and flexibility because of lack of activity. My push ups are taking a hit because my back hurts so much when I do them.

So, can I get some help? Sifu Wiebe, can I get the contact info for your chiropractor? Yes, I know it's about time but I'm stubborn and don't like going to those types of places.

Sifu Playter, can I get some help with my kicks? I'm losing strength and mobility and my hips crack and scream if I throw one even with minimal force. You were helping a student the other day with his kicks, have any more advice for me?

Does anyone have any advice for a bad runner? I figured I could at least go for some light jogging, but two days later I have huge pain in my shins. Shin splints have always been a problem for me and after talking to Ms. Csillag I'm sure it's my form.

I've made appointments to get my knee sorted out, so that's a step. I think my bed is a huge factor, so I'll be swapping it out in the next day or so for a firmer one we have upstairs. And I plan on getting a new pillow (again).

I'm going to start cooking more. My husband has the metabolism of a hummingbird and therefore cooks what he loves, namely gravy and meat. Not good for me, but if I cook he will eat. As long as I have a side of cheese so he can smother anything green.

Any other tidbits from you guys would help. I'm just so frustrated lately. Advil is what gets me through the day, and I hate being dependent like that.

I would be happy to help you with your kick at a time that works for you. Some thing I have found really helpful for back issues are sit ups. I also have a lower back issue and I find situps really beneficial. Tiffany uses Tie Chi for her back and that seems to really help her.

We could go running/jogging together, I often have time off during the day :) we will take it slow and build up our stamina so we don't sacrifice form. I agree with Sifu Playter about the sit ups, if I don't do them, I experience a lot of pain. As for the push ups, is it possible to modify them? If not, I would think a break may be in order. Anything else you need, just ask! That's what we are here for :)

I can totally relate as my back problems affect my kicks and so much more. I've been using a chiro for a while. I used to go to Back on Track in Spruce Grove and now I go to Dr. Pyrozko in Stony (he is a black belt at Green Dragon Kung Fu).

I will add acupuncture at Jade or if you go to Acuharmony, make an appointment.
As for cooking, I can certainly help there.
I concur with Sifu Playter about situps for back pain, however I would extend from situps to include core exercises to expand what you can do.

So great that you realize you need help and that you ask for help. So many people don't. It is especially hard for Sifus who we often view as superheros. I still think of you as a superhero even as you face these challenges! If you go to fast tracks in Edmonton, they have a treadmill attached to a computer and they can do an analysis of your running form and foot fall. I have never done it but it may help...

Geeze, not sure but I seem to be missing some of your postings on the I Ho Chuan site. Sorry for catching up so late. Running, change to trail running if you aren't already. Look for knarly ones that force you to be more dynamic in your stride. Off camber changes, logs, puddles I find gets more muscles involved and relieves stress on heels, shins and knees. Trails, particularly grass surface offers way more cushioning than just pounding pavement which will help a ton. Trail surfaces make running a lot more fun as well. In terms of pace, I always think to keep a running stride regardless of pace, slow it to a snail stride if necessary. Stopping to walk kills motivation to start again, and it causes heart rate to fluctuate which I find hinders my overall pace. Next is footwear. I have purchased so many pairs of shoes all feeling comfortable, but only one pair doesn' t cause grief with my knees.

I am planning on getting a couple runs in over the summer and hope there is some interest in people joining me!

I don't know much, but maybe a couple of these things will help. Catch me at the Kwoon to talk more if you would like.
